TRAILER: A Dangerous Method (2012).

A Dangerous Method is the next film from David Cronenberg, from a script by playwright Christopher Hampton.  It stars recent Cronenberg muse Viggo Mortensen (A History Of Violence, Eastern Promises) as Sigmund Freud and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, Centurion) as Karl Jung.  That’s right, it’s an action movie about the invention of psychotherapy!

It’s not that, but it is a historical drama with two of the better, more consistently interesting male movie stars of the moment, from an excellent writer and a director who cannot be confined by your silly little labels.  I like Keira Knightley too, and she plays the woman who gets between Jung and Freud – at least ideologically if not otherwise…

Seriously, I don’t think there’s going to be fighting in this movie. Just because Fassbender played Magneto in the latest X-Men movie, don’t let this start getting you to think of mutant-powered fireworks between the Professor-Xavier-like Freud and the more Magneto-esque Jung.  Seriously.  It’s not an action movie.

Although they do make a Sigmund Freud action figure

I guess you could have this guy fight your Magneto action figure if you really really wanted to.

Hmmm.  It’s very possible that this is the first movie that my parents will be anticipating as much as my comic-book-loving friends will be.

For my part, I’m just looking forward to what will surely be an intriguing, thoughtful movie.  Unfortunately, we all have to wait until February of 2012 – at least, those of us in the UK and USA do.  Germany gets it in November.  Go figure.
